Moran found a 44-year-old Ashland man smashing the glass, then struggling with officers from four different agencies before being zapped with a stun gun and arrested. "I've never seen anybody try to break into a police department," Moran said, adding the man's motive still wasn't known and might never be. "I can't explain it. I don't believe he had a rational reason for doing it." Daniel Joshua Sims remained lodged in the Jackson County Jail Thursday on charges of second-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, according to jail records. His bail was set at $43,000. Court records show his last reported address as Ashland First Congregational United Church of Christ, which provides emergency shelter for the homeless on winter nights. Moran said he was catching up on paperwork about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday when he heard what sounded like a gunshot at the station's front doors. "Of course, I find out later it was him throwing a rock and missing the window and hitting the door," Moran said. "It was pretty loud because the echo in here is pretty good." Moran came out of his office and watched from behind a pane of ballistic safety glass as the front door shattered, spraying glass into the lobby. Sims entered, his shirt pulled up over the back of his head to mimic a hood, Moran said. Moran pulled his gun. "This guy came rushing in. To his surprise, he came in facing me and a weapon," Moran said. "He wasn't expecting anyone, apparently." Moran ordered Sims to stay put as he called in backup. But Sims walked back outside, saying he wanted to check on his dog, Moran said. Moran followed him out. Other officers from Ashland and Phoenix police arrived, along with deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Sims reportedly struggled during arrest attempts and kept trying to stand up, warning his dog would attack. Officers used a stun gun, but Sims kept fighting. Eventually, officers had him in custody. The dog, which didn't attack, was taken to Jackson County Animal Care and Control unhurt, Moran said. Damage to the department's front entrance was estimated at $2,500. In Moran's seven years at the department and 40-plus years in law enforcement, this was a first. "Surprises like that, they do set you on edge, obviously," Moran said. "There are a lot of unknowns."
