SPORTS BRIEFS Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 10, 2016 at 5:44 PM Posted Feb. 10, 2016 at 5:44 PM » Social News Local football players earn Shrine honors Phoenix’s Mase Masalosalo (offensive lineman/defensive end), Cascade Christian’s Brandon Winter (lineman) and St. Mary’s Nick VanValkenberg (defensive back/kicker) have been selected to play for the East team in the 64th East-West All-Star Football Game. The contest, which benefits Portland Shriners Hospital for Children, is Aug. 6 in Baker City. Coaches nominate players and select the teams, but may only nominate one of their own players as well as any other players from their league they feel are worthy. Each team has 30 players and 30 alternates. The East leads the all-time series 29-25-3. The game will be recorded by ROOT Sports and televised the following Monday in five states. Renegades set to host preseason game The Southern Oregon Renegades men’s football team will host the Pacific Northwest Blizzard of Bend in a preseason contest at U.S. Cellular Community Park at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. The Renegades went 3-5 last year. SOU to celebrate “Play Like a Girl” night In honor and celebration of women and girls in sports, Southern Oregon University basketball will host "Play Like a Girl" night Saturday during the Raider women's home game against Eastern Oregon University. EOU is responsible for the only blemish on the sixth-ranked Raider women's record thus far this season, which stands at 22-1 overall and 15-1 in the Cascade Conference. "Play Like a Girl" Night is being conducted in support of the #PlayLikeAGirl online campaign, which seeks to dispel the notion that playing like a girl is an insult. All women and girls 18 years of age and younger will receive free admission, and fans will have an opportunity to meet the team following the game. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. inside Ashland High's Mountain Avenue Gym. Lillard named to U.S. national team Portland guard Damian Lillard has been added to the U.S. national basketball team pool, giving the Americans 31 players for 12 spots. Lillard fell just short of a place on the 2014 World Cup of Basketball roster and wasn't among the original 30 candidates for Rio de Janeiro announced last month. But he called USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo recently and said he wanted to remain involved in the program. The fourth-year guard is averaging career highs of 24.2 points and 7.3 assists, ranking among the top seven in the NBA in both.
