In the '60s and '70s, my ex-brother-in-law, a rich almond grower in California, used to laugh about his workers who would disappear en masse whenever any green pickup drove by. How many would come north without knowing they would find employment? Also, any children I have known who have either come of age or were born here are as American as you or I. Please, let's put the focus where it belongs and embrace all new Americans. Gail Ahrens Talent Tale of two cities About 70 years ago we were at war with Japan and we bombed two of their cities (Nagasaki and Hiroshima) to end their part in World War II. At the time, they were large, beautiful cities that played an important part in the struggle. The atom bombs came close to totally destroying them and killed and wounded untold numbers. Today, both cities are beautiful wonders to behold. The before and after must be seen to really appreciate what a hard working, determined, nation-loving people can do to a city that lay in ashes. Now, 70 years ago, Detroit, Mich., was the wealthiest city in the U.S. and also played an important part in World War II. It had a population of close to 2 million. It also was a beautiful city with large buildings and factories that made massive amounts of cars and pickups. Today Detroit is one of our poorest cities with only about half as many people as were there before, with thousands of homes vacant and destroyed and many factories unused and falling apart The before and after is sickening! The question is: What made the difference in these two cities? Gordon DeVos Medford Why fire him now? Regarding the firing on the city manager of Phoenix, it prompts me to ask why would a mayor and council fire a city manager with just 90 days left on his contract? Simply do not renew it! A simple phone call reveals that this may well cost the taxpayers $35,000 to $45,000 or more. A lot of money for a cash-strapped town, a lot of money for a change in direction, whatever that means. Clearly they seemed to have no good reason, they even praised him. Why are the taxpayers paying this? Mike Stitt Phoenix Go all the way I just read that Phoenix has decided to implement a 3 percent tax on marijuana. My thought is, if you are going to support a vice that does destroy lives, why not go whole hog? A more lucrative way to get money for the city coffers would be to license prostitution. In doing that we could turn the town into little Las Vegas with pimps and all their baggage. People who advocate licensing any vice are just as guilty as those who participate. There is quite a bit in Romans 1, but verse 22 says "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools." Please take time to read Chapter 1:18 through verse 32. Bob Casebier Medford Good enough for founders I am not a Muslim, but Trump's anti-Muslim comments distress me. Hasn't he read our history? Our country was colonized by people seeking religious freedom. And the first 16 words of our Constitution's First Amendment are "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free expression thereof." That was good enough for George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Ben Franklin. Why not Trump?
