The move from the four-story Black Oak building follows Providence Medical Group's 2015 acquisition of the clinic and separates the Providence facility from its primary competitor, Asante. Providence says its longer-term plans include building a new clinic off Stewart Avenue in south Medford. The move will take place Feb. 29. Some of the clinic's administrative operations will be housed in a separate Ellendale Avenue location, while two of its caregivers will move to the clinic's office on Hillcrest Park Drive. The Ellendale clinic will house nine care providers with a support staff of approximately 80, while another 20 staff members will be assigned to the administrative office. The Hillcrest clinic staff will have five care providers and a 15-person staff. "With the urgent care service we already have in Central Point, this allows us to bookend the valley with those services," Providence Medical Group/Oregon CEO Doug Koekkoek said Friday. While the Ellendale location is more of a bridge site than a long-term solution, Koekkoek said it will be several years before Providence's plans for a clinic in KOGAP Enterprises’ Stewart Meadows Village come to fruition. Steward Meadows Village is in the early phases of development at the southwest corner of Stewart Avenue and Highway 99 South. Although the Ellendale location is significantly smaller than the Black Oak building, it has the upside of being more accessible. "One thing that drew us here was the easy access to the freeway," Koekkoek said. "There's also some synergy from the Sunstone Medical Research practice nearby. This would complement anything we might build in Stewart Meadows. We've spent a lot of time getting the site on Ellendale Drive ready. We think it will provide a pretty robust service, and we don't view it as temporary housing by any stretch; it offers a full complement of X-ray and ultrasound services like we do at Black Oak." The clinic's medical director, Christopher Alftine, who moved to the Hillcrest office in 2014, said the move will take place beginning next Wednesday. "There will be challenges with people in three locations, but I think we've got it figured out," he said. "Right now, if a patient needs an X-ray, we send them to Black Oak. Now (after the move) they will go to Ellendale." The clinic's patients have been notified of the change, he said. With primary care options in Ashland, Phoenix, south Medford, Central Point and on the Providence Hospital campus, Koekkoek said, Providence is positioned to handle its client's needs. "We're not growing primary (care) to build hospital volumes," he said. "We'd like to keep people out of the hospital." Although the hours will remain the same when the changeover takes place, he anticipated additional availability in the near future. "I think we will ramp up the urgent care through expanded weekend and evening hours," Koekkoek said. "We're still adding some providers."
