Warrant issued in Eagle Point shooting death A suspect has been identified but remains at large in the shooting death of an Eagle Point man whose body was found last week along an irrigation ditch. Jackson County sheriffs deputies said Sunday that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of 49-year-old Robert Steven Turner on a charge of murder. Turner, also of Eagle Point, is wanted in connection with the death of Michael J. "Smitty" Smith, whose body was found Thursday along a ditch about two miles from his home in the Derby Road area. An employee of the Eagle Point Irrigation District found the body. Deputies said Smith, 39, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Turner is believed to have fled the area shortly after the murder, and remains at large. He may be hitchhiking in the Southern California area, where he has family, deputies said. Detectives left Friday for Los Angeles, where they are working with the L.A. County Sheriffs Department. Turner should be considered armed and dangerous, deputies said. Anyone with more specific information about his whereabouts should notify local law enforcement.   Obituaries | Sports | Business | Classifieds |  Tempo | Prime Times | So Oregon Sites | Outdoor Journal | Subscribe | Contact | Movies | Advertise | Real Estate Showcase | Archive  | Editorials | Letters to the editor | Religion | Wake-up Call | NIE | Cyber Chef | Job Network | So Oregon Weather | WSJ Northwest | Forums | AP Wire | AP Money | F.A.Q. | Awards Ottaway Newspapers, Inc.
