Proceeds from the Books for Kigutu sale in Medford will go toward books and educational materials for children in an East African village. The fourth annual event will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at 2569 Delmar Way. Furniture, tools, musical instruments, bicycles, antiques, collectibles and, of course, books will be for sale, according to Books for Kigutu organizer Katherine Leppek. Leppek founded the nonprofit four years ago, partnering with East Africa health care nonprofit Village Health Works, a group of retired teachers and U.S. Forest Service members. The inspiration came after reading the book "Strength In What Remains," by Tracy Kidder, a story about Village Health Works' formation and ongoing work in Burundi, Africa. "It was just a book that stayed with me," Leppek said. Leppek went to the group's website to learn more, which is when she saw the photo: a paltry number of heavily damaged books in a Burundi schoolroom that housed hundreds of students. "My reaction was, 'That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen,' " Leppek said. She and several friends formed the group and started gathering educational supplies, which are shipped to Village Health Works' New York office before being transported to Kigutu, a Burundi village. Four years after the group's founding, a small library of donated materials has been established at the Kigutu Academy. Leppek and other group founders visited Burundi in July, taking 300 or so books in their luggage to donate. While there, she noticed there were no materials in the village's native tongue, Kirundi. "It's hard for me to imagine that," Leppek said. "Being teachers, we decided we'll just make our own materials." Their first ventures onto the publishing front include children's books "Let's Eat" and "Rubin Goes to School," both told with photographs and text. Both will be printed in Kirundi, French and English. "The books are small, and the idea is to publish a lot of them so the kids can read them in school and then can take them home," Leppek said.
