Eagle Point sweeps Ashland in baseball ASHLAND -- Strong pitching and hitting carried Eagle Point to a Southern Oregon Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Ashland Friday. Nick Newmann and Jesse Stevenson combined to allow five Ashland hits over the two games as the Eagles won two six-inning games, 12-2 and 9-1. The second game was cut short due to heavy rain. Newmann struck out seven and allowed two hits while Stevenson had six strikeouts and no earned runs in the nightcap. The Eagles also collected 18 hits on the day, including three home runs. "We hit the ball hard all day," said Eagle Point coach Tom Britton. "We're really swinging the bats well, and our pitching was terrific." Ryan Garrett went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to pace the Eagles in Game 1, including a three-run homer in the third. Jake Kleker followed with a two-run homer in the third to give Eagle Point a 5-0 lead. Eagle Point stormed out to an 8-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap, with Evan Pogue smacking a three-run homer in the second. Newmann, 3-for-3 in the opener, added two hits and two RBIs in the second game, while Charlie Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Softball CASCADE CHRISTIAN 14-8, PROSPECT 2-2 -- At Prospect, Shelly Nicholson provided the big bat as the Challengers swept a District 6 doubleheader on the road. Nicholson had a three-run double in the first inning of Game 1 to get Cascade Christian off to a good start, and Laural Kelly did the rest in holding Prospect to one hit. In the second game, Nicholson added two more hits. Kary Lenderman and April Shields each had two hits for Prospect (1-6, 0-2 Dist. 6) in Game 2. Track and Field SPRINGFIELD INVITATIONAL -- At Springfield, North Medford fared well in blustery conditions as the Black Tornado boys finished second and the girls placed third in the eight-team meet. Jesuit won the boys and girls team titles, as well as the combined title. North Medford finished second in the combined competition. North's Emily Dunn set a school record in the long jump, finishing third with a leap of 15 feet, 10 inches. Jennifer Abbott placed first in the 100 meters in a time of 12.7 seconds, while teammate Keri Cain finished third (13.0). Denali Tice won the 400 at 1:01.2, edging teammate Rosanna Medina (1:02.5). Dunn, Abbott, Cain and Jamie MacLauchlan teamed to win the short relay in a state-best time of 50.0. The long relay foursome of Medina, Abbott, Tice and Joanna Thomson took second at 4:14.4. Tice also won the triple jump at 33-5, with Kerby Boschee taking second in the discus and Nicole Tucker placing second in the javelin with identical 105-3 efforts. Nakeli Maurin placed third in the pole vault at 9-0. In the boys competition, Thomas O'Brien took first in the 100 at 11.1, while Andrew Ludlow was third in the 200 (23.6) and Simon Driskell was second in the 400 (50.2). Nick Dunn turned in one of the state's top performances in the 800 with a 1:58.1 to place second. Scott Myers led North in the throwing events, taking first in the shot put (52-1) and discus (151-0). Dan Johnson finished second in the discus (147-1), while John Bracken took third in the high jump (6-0) and pole vault (12-0).
