Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell West side will do spring cleaning Big disposal containers will be available at Santo Center for the cleanup day Saturday By MEG LANDERS Mail Tribune While some yards are filled with spring tulips, John and Charlotte Laurain’s is filled with busted-up junk. Piles alongside their house include a refrigerator, a freezer, an oven, gutters, a sofa, a sink, wallboard, siding, carpet, cabinets, shower doors, and much more, all broken and rotted. John Laurain said the junk consists of all the damaged things he and his wife removed since they bought the house last year and began remodeling. He said with driving the trash around to all its proper disposal places, he would be looking at a hundred or so dollars, and a lot of time. "It would take me two full days," he said. "We would have five or six trailer loads." That’s why John Laurain, 35, and Charlotte Laurain, 36, can’t wait for Saturday’s West Medford Clean Up Day. It’s in their neighborhood and it’s free, he said. The West Medford Community Coalition, in conjunction with the city of Medford, is making it easy for neighbors to ditch their debris at the Santo Community Center at the corner of Jackson Street and Columbus Avenue. The event is sponsored in part by a $1,500 neighborhood grant from the city. Rogue Disposal and Recycling will haul for free three 30-cubic-yard containers. Other companies donating their services include American Appliance Recyclers, Burn’s Tire Recycling, Schnitzer Steel, the Lions Center, Biomass One and Allied Battery. For those physically unable to tote their trash, volunteers are available to pick it up. "The West Medford Coalition did this about seven or eight years ago," said coalition member Lenore Drake. Drake said they chose the event date this year in the hopes that the west side of town would look tidy for the Pear Blossom race, which has a route through west Medford, the following weekend. West Medford resident Jane Bridcott has been coordinating volunteers and fielding phone calls, and said she hopes to get more volunteers. "I would say I’ve had at least 30 phone calls," she said. While some are offering to volunteer, many are requesting help in moving large heavy appliances, she said. Yard maintenance can be contagious. She said sometimes when one person in a block fixes up their place, it inspires others to do the same. "I hope it gives some people more pride in their neighborhood and their property," she said, "and that people will go help each other out more, too." Bridcott lives next door to the Laurains, and said that while she’s pleased they’ve done so much to fix up the property, she’ll be more pleased after Saturday.
