Kenneth L. Vaughn, 60, was shot and killed by next-door neighbor Donald L. Easley, also 60, according to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. The shooting took place on Easley's property, 23833 Redwood Highway, shortly after 4 p.m. Friday. For years, Vaughn had been befriended by Easley and his mother, according to neighbor Jill Talise. "They have helped him and helped him and helped him," Talise said on Saturday, after stopping her car a few hundred feet from the shooting scene. "She (Easley's mother) calmed him down. She was like a mother to him." Talise said Vaughn was "kind and intelligent when he wasn't having an episode," but that she and other neighbors were wary of him. "He was just very disturbed," she said. "He was a loose cannon." According to the Sheriff's Office, Vaughn went to the Easley place on Friday and the two men began to argue. Both armed themselves with handguns, and Vaughn was shot dead, Sgt. Ken Selig said in a brief news release. No one else was injured. No charges have been filed. Easley and his mother did not respond to a request for comment made through Talise. "Donald is so kind," Talise said. "This is just the worst-case ending. Don called and told me he's still in a state of shock. It's just sad." Talise said she was told that Vaughn often fired his gun and that Vaughn had left a crisis center just a day or two before Friday's shooting. Talise believed Vaughn was getting "more and more out there" as time went on. Last year, Vaughn was convicted of unlawful possession of a gun and driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to Josephine County Circuit Court records. He also was scheduled to be tried Dec. 3 on another DUII charge. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 474-5151.
