Police identified the body of Daron Jay Bucholz, who lived on the 4500 block of Cloudcrest Drive in Medford, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Bucholz was one of four men who went on a Sunday evening fishing trip to a pond along the 5000 block of Old Stage Road, police said. Bucholz, who did not know how to swim, and two of the other men went fishing from an old canoe they found at the pond, police said. After the canoe overturned about 9 p.m., the two others were able to swim to safety, deputies said. The trio tried to rescue Bucholz, but failed, deputies said. Advertisement Police divers about 11:30 p.m. recovered Bucholz’s body in 15 feet of water just below where the canoe capsized, sheriff’s Capt. Joe Puckett said. No one was wearing a life jacket and no flotation devices were on the canoe, Puckett said. Flotation devices are not required for boaters on private ponds.
