Jacksonville expected to confirm church permit rejection JACKSONVILLE -- The City Council is expected to approve a final order rejecting a permit for the First Presbyterian Church when the council meets at 7 tonight at Old City Hall. Resolution 772 would uphold the Planning Commission's November denial of church plans to build a new sanctuary and education building on Middle Street. The City Council approved the conditional use permit in January but reversed its decision Thursday. In response, a radio show has raised money for church legal fees, and several Jacksonville businesses reportedly have received calls and letters threatening boycotts. "The City Council is not listening to its constituents," said Fernando Serrano, owner of La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant, who said his business received a call from a couple who said they wouldn't eat in Jacksonville because of the decision. Four other businesses reportedly received boycott threats -- Jacksonville Market, MacLevin's, Jacksonville Inn and Bella Union. Serrano said he hopes these are random calls. "If there is an organized boycott, we businesses will end up paying for the actions of the City Council." Meanwhile, KDOV Radio held a second fund drive Monday morning for the church. The station has raised $17,672 so far to help with First Presbyterian's legal fees. The church has spent about $7,500 in legal fees so far.
