MEN'S BASKETBALL Wooden-recipient Miles enjoys Final Four trip OIT coach spoke before 1,000 at weekend breakfast ceremony Comment By Steve Mathies Klamath Falls Herald & News MailTribune.com By Steve Mathies Klamath Falls Herald & News Posted Apr. 6, 2015 at 5:52 PM Updated Apr 6, 2015 at 5:53 PM By Steve Mathies Klamath Falls Herald & News Posted Apr. 6, 2015 at 5:52 PM Updated Apr 6, 2015 at 5:53 PM » Social News Danny Miles joined an elite fraternity last weekend. The veteran Oregon Tech coach accepted the John Wooden Keys to Life Award from the Athletes in Action Saturday at the group’s annual Final Four breakfast held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I men’s national tournament. “It went great,” Miles said. “The speech went well. I met a lot of terrific people. It’s special, but anytime you win a coaching award, it’s based on what a lot of other people did — former players, administration, fans.” “It was absolutely amazing,” OIT President Chris Maples added. “It was way cool. It was quite a show. (Miles) did an absolutely wonderful job. He talked about growing up, getting to OIT and coaching three sports, all with losing records. He spoke well to an Athletes in Action group.” Introduced by his son Josh, Miles — the long-time OIT coach who graduated from Medford High and starred at Southern Oregon University — shared his faith life with more than 1,000 guests in Indianapolis for the tournament. “I didn’t know he was going to say anything,” Miles said of his son. “They kept that a secret from me.” Miles shared about attending a friend’s funeral, what that friend had written to be shared then and how it changed Miles’ life. “I talked about from the time I started at OIT and how, early on, I was going to make OIT my UCLA,” Miles said. “I’ve been lucky. And I shared my faith, which came into play later (in his 45-year career at OIT).” “It was a nice, personal side of Danny that most people don’t get to see,” Maples said. The breakfast was emceed by Clark Kellogg of CBS Sports, who anchors that network's college basketball coverage, especially in the postseason. Kellogg was one of the 19 winners of the Wooden Keys to Life Award before Miles. Among the other winners of the award in attendance was University of Washington men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar, who played for AIA when the team representing Campus Crusade for Christ made its only Klamath Falls appearance. OIT beat AIA, 114-106, on Feb. 5, 1990. Other winners include former Pacific Lutheran, Washington and Washington State coach Marv Harshman, former Oregon State star A.C. Green, NBA All-Stars Bobby Jones, David Robinson and David Thompson, Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward, who played in the NBA for 12 years; and coaches Del Harris, Dick Bennett, Homer Drew and Don Meyer. “It was really well done,” Maples said of the breakfast.
