I went there about 35 years ago. There were only a few plots. Were those transferred to another cemetery? — Laura L., via email Interesting question, Laura. Many of the area's earliest settlers are buried in sites around town, and as the Rogue Valley has developed, some smaller cemeteries may become harder to locate. Jason Caro, cemetery sexton for the city of Ashland, says that a cemetery matching that description is not one of the three locations the city oversees: Mountain View Cemetery, Ashland Cemetery and Hargadine Cemetery. The Rogue Valley Genealogical Society also has a list of cemeteries on its website, but there’s nothing listed at the location you describe. The site on Ashland Lane would lie outside of Ashland city limits. However, Jackson County Genealogical Society volunteer coordinator Chuck Eccleston confirms that this site, known as Myer Cemetery, is the burial place of Nathaniel and Mary Myer, two of the area's early settlers, as well as other families and soldiers from the 1850s. He estimates there are about 130 graves there, though neighbor Kari Gies says only about seven have grave markers. Because the cemetery is landlocked and accessible only by private property, visitors should contact Gies at 541-778-0904 if they wish to see it. There is no signage, but Gies says the neighbors are raising money to get one. "It might be the oldest in the county," Eccleston says. There has been a group effort between neighbors and Jackson County Genealogical Society for the last five years to maintain and clean up the area, he adds. He also says he's heard reports from neighbors about headstones going missing. As to whether a particular plot is still there, we'd recommend checking out the site for yourself or looking up names on an online genealogy website.
