Data from the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network shows a cluster of 24 earthquakes shook the ground between 6:45 p.m. Wednesday and 10:37 a.m. Thursday in northwest Nevada's Sheldon Wildlife Refuge. The data shows the quakes ranged from magnitudes as quiet as 1.7 up to a respectable 4.6.  "Lots and lots of 2s and 3s," says John Vidale, PNSN director. "They're common, but this one is more striking than most." Ken Smith, seismic network manager at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, located at the University of Nevada-Reno, says similar clusters have come and gone over the past year.  "As of last week, we'd had almost 5,200 earthquakes in that area," Smith says, adding the sustained activity in this most recent swarm sets it apart. "It's just an unusually energetic earthquake swarm." The slice of jittery terrain had gone quiet for several weeks, Vidale says, but recently had an apparent burst of new energy.  "It is kind of bursty. You get a couple in a few minutes, then it's quiet," he says.  The activity takes place on a fault, but Vidale says there isn't a whole lot of explanation beyond that as to why. One possibility is water percolating through the fault, weakening the area from time to time, but nothing is terribly definitive.   "I wish we understood them better," he says.  Earthquakes with magnitude 4 and above are easily felt in nearby communities such as Cedarville, Calif., though no property damage or injuries have been reported.  Even though the quakes haven't caused any damage, Vidale says a New Yorker magazine article about an imminent apocalypse-grade earthquake in the Pacific Northwest has more people paying attention to tremors of any size.  "That certainly raised awareness, but I wish we could raise it in a more responsible way," he says.
