Coffee has teamed up with the original artist on the popular "Walking Dead" comic book series for the second issue of an original comic book series produced by the coffee company. Issue two of "Dutch Bros. Rebellion: Further Adventures of Rebel Man" is written by Dutch Bros. creative director Dan Buck and drawn by Tony Moore, whose comic-book art resume includes numerous Marvel Comics titles, Dark Horse Comics' "Fear Agent" and Image Comics' "Battle Pope." “I thought this project was especially fun because it was clearly a limited engagement for me,” Moore said during a telephone interview. “It can be like a starter comic for someone who’s not really into comics.” The comic began last year when Moore traveled to Grants Pass for a signing at Iguana Comics in Grants Pass. Brant Boersma, Dutch Bros. director of culture — and a comic-book fan — met Moore, and the two became friends. They also talked about doing a comic book together, specifically a sequel to the first issue of "Dutch Bros. Rebellion." "I love the process of taking words that someone says and giving visuals to them," Boersma said. The first issue in the series, "Dutch Bros. Zombie Rebellion," was black and white, drawn by former Dutch Bros. employee Jeff Wester and written by Nathan Edmonson, current writer on Marvel Comics' "The Punisher" and "Black Widow" titles. “(Brant) kind of pitched me the idea (and asked) if I was interested in working on something, and it sounded fun,” Moore said. The four-page comic tells the story of Rebel Man, based off the company's Blue Rebel energy drink, and his fight to survive during a zombie apocalypse. “He's just kind of a rock-and-roll looking dude, he looks like an older punk guy. He’s just surviving in a zombie apocalypse. That’s more or less it,” Moore said. "It's like a little vignette." Moore started illustrating the book about two months ago and wrapped it up a few weeks ago. Company officials will be at the Rose City Comic Con Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21, with issues of the story, and Moore will sign copies. Whether a third issue will be tackled isn't known yet, but Boersma is hopeful more Rebellion stories will hit the page. "My ultimate goal would, eventually, be to have a graphic novel that has a bunch of these Rebellion stories that were done by multiple creators," he said. "I'd love for it to evolve."
