CRIME Caught on camera: $500 sunglasses theft Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 5, 2015 at 3:27 PM Updated Aug 5, 2015 at 3:41 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 5, 2015 at 3:27 PM Updated Aug 5, 2015 at 3:41 PM » Social News A private surveillance video posted today on the Medford police Facebook page starts innocently enough: a woman out for an early-morning walk in southeast Medford. That changes quickly. The woman turns into a driveway in the 2800 block of La Mirada Drive, pulls a flashlight out of her shirt and peeks in a vehicle parked there. Seemingly satisfied, she then starts to pull out some gloves from inside her pants. "We cut the video there," the post reads. "She then enters the un locked vehicle and makes off with the property." The property was a pair of $500 Gucci sunglasses, Medford police say. The time stamp on the video is about 4:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. Detectives are still on the hunt for the woman who committed the theft.  "I've gotten a handful of tips," says Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. "The only thing is the video is just good enough, and it looks like a lot of people, but not good enough to where you can make a really clear identification." The utilization of video security systems by private citizens is becoming more common, mostly because the systems are becoming more affordable. "It's something we are looking for more and more on criminal cases," Budreau says. "We're looking for witnesses, but we're also looking for those surveillance images. We've found they're a lot more reliable than witness recollection." Budreau says that reliability has him thinking about a voluntary camera-registration program. Anyone with a private security system could report it to police, who would then get in touch with the owners and ask to look at footage if a crime occurred near their home. "That system would be purely voluntary," Budreau says. Anyone with information about the Gucci sunglasses theft is asked to contact Medford police at 541-770-4784.
