Wind and rain have plagued searchers from Josephine, Jackson and Douglas counties, including dog tracking teams that scoured the area in search of Donald DuBose Thursday and today. "The river is a fear, blackberries are a fear, the cold is a fear," said DuBose's grandson Chris DuBose of Medford. Donald DuBose had lived at The Heart of a Man foster home at 311 Avenue de Teresa for less than a month, his grandson said. Cory Krauss, Search and Rescue coordinator for Josephine County, told searchers this morning that Alzheimer's patients tend to dig into brush, and said the search would continue to focus on the Averill Drive and Avenue de Teresa area. The railroad tracks along Foothill Boulevard were also a focus of the search, a half-mile in each direction from the tracks. DuBose walked out of the home at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, said Kirk Sager, owner of The Heart of a Man. DuBose was not wearing adequate clothing for the rainy, cold conditions. In fact, he may have been wearing only socks and a T-shirt. He is 5-foot-9 and 230 pounds, according to Sager. Krauss said the search on Thursday covered all of Averill Drive, Avenue de Teresa and Foothill Boulevard all the way to Rogue River, and included tracking dogs with handlers. A helicopter also flew above the area. The search included a helicopter. Krauss also searched the river in a boat with Josephine County Marine Deputy Ernie Fields, between the home and Baker Park in Grants Pass. The home is within 75 feet of the river. Sager said he has alarms on all perimeter doors to alert him. Sager said he was asleep and did not hear the alarm, which activates chimes, when DuBose apparently walked out. The system also automatically sends a text message to his phone, which he also did not hear. DuBose has lived in Grants Pass for about 10 years, after moving from Mendocino, Calif. He was a machinist in his working days, his grandson said. Anyone with information is urged to call Krauss at 541-218-7153, or 911.
