COLLEGE ROUNDUP Rozario, Ghelfi set SOU track records Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Apr. 4, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News One of the biggest days in Southern Oregon track and field history yielded two school records and eight NAIA automatic qualifying marks Friday at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and Stanford Invitational. Raider records fell at the hands of Jessie Rozario in the women's 1,500 meters and Eric Ghelfi in the men's 10,000 at the Distance Carnival, where NAIA 'A' qualilfying standards were also hit by Kevin Jorgensen (1,500 meters), Rebecca Lupescu (10K) and Max Runia (10K). At the Stanford Invitational, Amelia Maguin took second in her flight and fourth overall in the women's 400 hurdles, while Markus Sanders became an automatic qualifier in the hammer and discus throws in his season debut. NAIA 'B' provisional standards were reached by Ray Schireman (5K), Caleb Diaz (10K) and Danny Parks (discus). Rozario ran the 1,500 in 4:36.50 to break Brynn Cogdill's 11-year-old SOU record by nearly five seconds. She won her flight, coming from last place with 500 meters remaining to clock the fifth-fastest time in the NAIA this season. Ghelfi's 10K time of 30:24.90 broke the school record by more than 15 seconds, was a personal best by more than 26 seconds and beat the NAIA automatic standard by more than 20. Runia, from Crater, ran a 30:50.63, putting him at No. 4 on the NAIA performance list. Schireman, from North Medford, ran 14:45.96 and missed an auto-qualifier mark by less than a second. Sanders, a double-All-American last season in the hammer and discus, threw the hammer 178 feet 8 inches, good for No. 4 in the NAIA. Maguin clocked in at 60.15. Softball SOU SWEPT: At Ashland, No. 17 Concordia had 28 hits in their eighth- and ninth-straight victories, downing Southern Oregon in Cascade Conference play, 10-2 and 8-7. Concordia catcher Kate Santos went 4-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs and two runs in the opener, and the Cavaliers overcame four errors by rallying for three runs in the sixth inning of the nightcap. Former South Medford pitcher Lucy Baldovino threw a complete game in Game 1 and pitched the final 2 1/3 innings in Game 2 to up her record to 16-2 for the Cavs, who improved to 30-10 overall and 11-3 in the CCC. The Raiders slid to 24-18 and 5-9 in the CCC. They'll host last-place Northwest (Wash.) on Saturday with first pitch slated for 11 a.m. In Game 1, Baldovino scattered seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts. She blanked the Raiders until the fifth, when Ally Painter doubled, Krystina Pardoski tripled and Davalin Ontiveros hit an RBI single. Pardoski went 2-for-3 in the loss. In Game 2, SOU’s Painter and Cortney Nolan each had two hits. Baseball UCLA 4, OREGON STATE 1: At Los Angeles, Oregon State's Gabe Clark collected three hits and Kyle Nobach drove in a run in the seventh inning in the Beavers' loss. Nobach pulled the Beavers to within three on a two-out double past the first baseman, and put the tying run at the plate. Pinch hitter Billy King hit a slicing ball to center that was caught on the run by Christoph Bono, ending the threat. Clark, meanwhile, singled in the second, doubled in the fourth and singled in the seventh for his sixth multi-hit game.
