Local philanthropist Dunbar Carpenter dies Longtime orchardist and benefactor is remembered as having helped hand out millions to deserving charities and nonprofits Dunbar Carpenter, 93, a longtime orchardist whose family foundation has granted millions of dollars to local nonprofit organizations, died Sunday at Rogue Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. Comment By Meg Landers MailTribune.com By Meg Landers Posted Apr. 16, 2008 at 12:29 AM By Meg Landers Posted Apr. 16, 2008 at 12:29 AM » Social News Dunbar Carpenter, 93, a longtime orchardist whose family foundation has granted millions of dollars to local nonprofit organizations, died Sunday at Rogue Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. "He was the model of the best of the whole community," said Dan Thorndike, member of the Carpenter Foundation board of trustees. Born in 1915 in Medford, Carpenter grew up outside of Boston, Mass. and earned a bachelor's degree in economics at Harvard. He and his wife, Jane, moved to Medford in 1946 to take over the family orchard and farm, now Dunbar Orchards and Rocky Knoll. In addition to work with many agricultural organizations, Carpenter was involved in the arts, sat on many arts organizations' boards, and founded what is now the Rogue Gallery. He was also an avid skier. The Carpenter Foundation was established by Dunbar's uncle, orchardist Alfred S.V. Carpenter, and Helen Bundy Carpenter in 1942. It was then called the Jackson County Recreation Agency and provided recreational activities for servicemen at Camp White. The foundation was reorganized in 1958 as a general-purpose family foundation. It now has assets totaling more than $22 million and gave out more than $800,000 in grants in 2007 in the arts, education, human services, public interest and scholarships. The foundation will remain in place, family members said Tuesday. Jane Carpenter died in December at age 92. The couple have three children: Karen Allan of Medford, Emily Mostue of Medford and Dunbar Scott Carpenter of Portland. Emily Mostue described her father as pragmatic and inventive. "He was immensely practical and he loved figuring out how to make things work," she said. Bill Thorndike, former board of trustees member and brother of Dan Thorndike, said the Carpenter family brought a broad perspective to a conservative, rural community. The Thorndikes' father and grandfather served on the Rogue Valley Medical Center board with Carpenter, and Bill Thorndike remembers the Carpenter family driving Citroen automobiles when he was growing up. "The Carpenters had different and bigger ideas," he said. "There was just this willingness to look at things in a very progressive way." Dunbar Carpenter was known for his soft heart and for helping struggling, new nonprofits get off the ground, he said. "While he really cared about everything, he was very detail-oriented," Bill Thorndike said. Many times he saw Dunbar Carpenter working with a foundering nonprofit on its budget and helping it develop itself as a business. If it hadn't been for Jane and Dunbar, he said, the Rogue Valley would not have as many successful arts and social services organizations as it does. Dan Thorndike said Jane and Dunbar Carpenter ran the foundation and interviewed grant applicants with great heart but discerning minds. "The right questions were always asked but in a gracious manner," he said. He said he admired Carpenter for continuing to be involved in the foundation, including attending the last board meeting. He added that he also appreciated Carpenter's Harvard accent and sense of humor. "He was very understated but he always had this chuckle," Dan Thorndike said. Sense of humor was one of the things her father was known for, said Karen Allan. "He was cracking jokes even as he was in the hospital," she said. But she added the key to the man's long, interesting life was his love of it. "He was a curious person, he liked to learn things." The family is holding a small private gathering and said there will be no service. Reach reporter Meg Landers at 776-4481 or e-mail [email protected].
