Hard work pays off for Clark in all-star vote Chelsi Clark made major improvement in a years time for the Phoenix Pirates in girls basketball. The senior point guard developed into the team leader and was recognized for her contributions with a selection as a Skyline Conference first-team all star. Clark, a two-year starter, averaged 9.5 points, three assists and three steals for the Pirates this season. "She assumed the role of our floor leader without anyone actually placing that role on her," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "Last year she would pass up shots or try to make extra passes when she didnt need to. She made some big strides from her junior to senior year." Illinois Valley senior Snow Staples, North Valley freshman center Elaina Renius joins Clark on the first team along with Henleys Heather Radke and sophomore Katherine Stock. Staples, who transferred from Ashland after her sophomore year, was a potent long-range shooter. Renius exploded on the scene after beginning the season as a back-up. She became a rebounding and scoring force for the Knights, who fell one victory short of reaching the state tournament. Radke, a senior forward, was chosen as player of the year and Henley first-year varsity coach Ron Smith was given coach of the year honors. Smith, better known as one of the best Class 3A cross country and track coaches in the state, took over head coaching duties after being a long-time basketball assist. Smith guided Henley all the way to the Class 3A state tournament fifth-place game, where the Hornets lost to Ontario, 60-43. "He tells me he coaches basketball like he coaches track," said Walker. "They were in good shape." Radke, a senior forward, led Henley to the conference championship with a 20-point average. "She was one of the better athletes in the conference," said Walker. "Shes always somewhere near the ball. Shes a player that you would certainly want on your team."
