Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend September 26, 2005 Police seek suspects in Sams Valley robbery By DAMIAN MANN Mail Tribune Sheriff’s deputies are searching for two Medford brothers suspected in an armed robbery that took place at the Rainey’s Corner Market in Sams Valley on Saturday night. Deputies say Mark Bradley Nelson, 36, and Randall Dean Nelson, 39, are armed and dangerous. They were last being seen in the Sams Valley area. "These people are known to us," said Mike Rainey, owner of the store at the corner of Highway 23 and Antioch Road. "They are locals." The suspects are also known to Sheriff’s deputies. Mark Nelson was convicted of killing his neighbor’s dog in 1997. Randall Nelson was arrested on suspicion of possession of amphetamines in 2002. Sheriff’s deputies said the suspects went to the store at about 8:30 p.m., brandishing a semi-automatic handgun at an employee outside by the store’s gas pumps around closing time. Advertisement Rainey said the amount of cash taken was far less than $1,000. He expected to get a clearer accounting today. "I don’t know exactly," he said. He said the employee, who was in his early 20s, immediately complied with the suspects’ orders. He said they told him, "I’ve got a gun. Give me the till," then took the money out of the till and got in a vehicle. Rainey said his gas station has an attendant who takes cash out at the pumps, and they don’t carry much money. "We’re like everybody else," he said. "We keep the minimum amount of cash available." The employee went inside the store to report that he had been robbed, and an off-duty Medford police officer happened to be inside. Deputies said that the officer saw the suspects’ vehicle traveling in the Sams Valley area and called in a description of it. An Oregon State trooper found the vehicle at the 3900 block of Old Sams Valley Highway. An unidentified female suspect was detained for questioning, but the two male suspects fled the scene and couldn’t be found. On Sunday, deputies conducted a search in the Sams Valley area, but the suspects weren’t located. Rainey said this is the first time his store has been robbed since he’s owned it. "It’s a sign of the times," he said, referring to the recent spate of robberies in Jackson County. "It’s really sad."
