Using strong pitching, tough defense and a late offensive eruption, the Mustangs downed Lakeside Recovery of Washington, 6-1, in a thrilling 13-inning contest to open the American Legion AAA regional baseball tournament at Powers Field in Cheyenne, Wyo. Medford left fielder Bryce Rogan came up huge, hitting the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 13th. That play was matched only by his crucial defensive gem in the bottom of the eighth. With the game tied at 1-all and two outs, Lakeside Recovery’s Alex Lambeau singled to left with baserunners on first and second base. Rogan charged hard toward the line drive, gathering it cleanly and launching a perfectly placed one-hopper to catcher Austin Zavala as Todd Reese neared home. Reese was called out at the plate. “That was the biggest play of the game,” Medford manager Nate Mayben said. “It would have been over and it was a really close play. Austin did a good job of catching the baseball on the bounce and putting on a good tag.” With the triumph, the Mustangs (39-12) will next face the Gillette Roughriders of Wyoming at 3:30 p.m. Pacific today in the eight-team tournament. Gillette beat Chugiak, Alaska, 9-5 in other action Wednesday. Jordan Ragan and Cody Coggins submitted strong performances on the mound for Medford. Ragan, who started, struck out six and allowed six hits, one earned run and three walks in 7⅔ innings. Coggins improved to 9-0 after fanning six and giving up two hits, no runs and no walks in 5⅓ innings. After allowing a single and sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, Coggins retired 15 of the next 16 batters. “They both did great,” Mayben said. “They were both able to dominate the inside part of the plate. The other team was looking to drive the ball the other way. … We did a good job playing defense.” Micah Brown went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, Zavala 2-for-6 with an RBI, Colton Westfall 2-for-6 with a run and Tate Cowden 2-for-7 for the Mustangs, who pulled away with five runs on six hits in the 13th. In the inning, Jared Evans was walked with one out before Brown singled. Rogan then recorded his line drive to left to give Medford a 2-1 lead. After a second out, Eric Carlson pounded an RBI single and Westfall singled to load the bases. Steen Fredrickson next drilled a run-scoring single before Cole Carder connected for a two-run single. Suddenly, the game was no longer so close. “It was nice to see,” Mayben said. “We’d like it a bit sooner. We weren’t being as disciplined at the plate. … We finally put the barrel on some good pitches to hit. It was nice to put some together.” Lakeside Recovery (33-17) went three up, three down in the bottom of the 13th. The Washington squad entered winners of 18 of its last 19 contests. “It was a good game,” Mayben said. “We had plenty of opportunities and they had plenty of opportunities. We’re just glad to be on the winning side of it. Both teams have a lot of tradition. We knew it would be tough.” Earlier in the game, Zavala evened things at 1-all with an RBI single that scored Brown in the seventh. Will Langan’s sacrifice fly in the second inning put Lakeside Recovery on the scoreboard first.
