North girl netters rule first day of district ROSEBURG -- As expected, North Medford dominated the opening day of the Southern Oregon Conference girls district tennis tournament at the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center Thursday. The two-time defending district champion Black Tornado had to overcome numerous rain delays, but nevertheless advanced three singles players and its top doubles team into the semifinals that will resume at 11 a.m. Saturday in Roseburg. "Everyone played as well as they could have," North coach Dale Jensen said. "None of our three singles players were tested. Even playing other seeds, they walked through the competition. You could see they were far superior to the other girls." North Medford sophomore Jenny Brown, the top singles seed, will face freshman teammate Annie Chaney in one semifinal, while junior Leslie Schultz takes on Klamath Union's Allison Wilson in the other. Schultz lost a two-set match to Wilson in regular-season competition at Klamath Falls. "Leslie will have a very good chance," said Jensen. "She's shown a lot of maturity this year and she's playing her best tennis now." Junior Tabitha Grytness, who didn't even make the Black Tornado district squad last year, advanced into the quarterfinals before losing to the second-seeded Wilson, 6-0, 6-0. North's top-seeded doubles team of Kelsey Chamberlain and Andrea Pratt escaped with a 7-5, 6-3 quarterfinal victory over Ashland's Justine Bowen-Jones and Jessica Baker. For the second year in a row, North Medford did not lose a first-round match and have someone fall into the consolation bracket. "That's quite a remarkable feat," said Jensen. Softball NORTH MEDFORD 11, EAGLE POINT 0 -- At Central Point, Keri Sevano and Steph Coe combined for a one-hitter for seventh-ranked North Medford (20-4, 12-0 SOC) in the non-conference game at Crater High, but Eagle Point executed a rare triple play. In the fifth inning, North's runners on first and second bases broke on a hit-and-run, and Amy Allen hit a line drive that was snagged by Eagle Point pitcher Jamie Williams. Williams threw to first baseman Ginny Hoye for out No. 2, and Hoye threw to shortstop Cassie Dodenhoff covering second to complete the triple play. The Black Tornado combined three hits with a walk and an error for four runs in the first inning. Coe provided the big hit with a two-run double. Hoye collected the Eagles (4-18, 0-12 SOC) lone hit, a two-out triple in the fourth.
