The shooting occurred in the center-divider area of the freeway just south of the Dunsmuir Grade Inspection Facility, between Mount Shasta City and Dunsmuir, according to a release from the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office. Vrenon died at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday, the release said. The incident began at about 6:53 a.m. Thursday, when officers stopped to check a vehicle that had been parked on the right shoulder of Interstate 5 southbound, north of the North Weed Boulevard exit. Officers saw a firearm in the car with the driver before he sped away, and a 16-mile pursuit ensued. A spike strip disabled the vehicle in the center divider of the highway near Mott Road in Siskiyou County. California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lacey Heitman told the Redding Record Searchlight newspaper that four officers were involved. She said the driver pulled a gun on the officers but none of them were injured. CHP’s Critical Incident Investigative Team, its Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team and the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation. This is the second officer-involved shooting after a pursuit in Siskiyou County in less than three weeks. On July 13, Matthew Graham, of Shasta County, was fatally shot after he stole a car at gunpoint in Siskiyou County and got into a shootout with sheriff's deputies in Dunsmuir. Graham was suspected in the disappearance of his baby daughter, Ember, who has not been found and is assumed dead. Anyone with information about this incident or Vrenon’s prior activities is urged to contact CHP’s Northern Division managing investigative assistant chief at 530-242-4363, or the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office 24-hour dispatch center at 530-841-2900.
