Born in Oakland, California December 20, 1923, he was raised in Sacramento by his loving guardian, Mrs. Reynolds, who treated him as a son after raising four of her own. He joined the Navy officer training program during WWII, served on the USS New Jersey, captained a transport boat from California to the Caribbean, and graduated as a chemical engineer from the University of Texas, where he met and married Gladys Ray, his wife of 51 years. First with Kaiser Aluminum and later as a consultant, his career in the alumina industry spanned over 60 years. Although he had many professional roles, one of his finest was as Production Manager for the QAL alumina refinery in Australia, the largest in the world. Always eager to share his expertise and knowledge, his greatest professional pride and satisfaction came via consulting and teaching his alumina technology course in countries around the world. He saw it as his privilege and responsibility to share his expansive knowledge, providing a bridge between past innovations and modern technology and practices. He was passionate about jazz and blues, collecting records and often venturing into out-of-the-way venues to hear his favorite jazz artists. He loved travel and the diverse cultures and people he met. He led bicycle tours in China and Ireland and backpack trips for the Sierra Club. With the world as his circumference, his center was always the high country of the Sierra Nevada, where he loved scaling peaks and guiding others through its majestic landscape. While his career and travels were important, his focus was always on his family: Gladys, his loving wife who passed in 1998; their children Peggy and Joe and their respective spouses Paul and Margie; his granddaughter Whitney; and Barbara, his dear wife of 16 years, and her children Jane and Towne. His family offers special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Rogue Valley Manor Health Center, Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, and Asante Hospice, and to Amy. He was admired by many for his generosity, humility, enthusiasm, and kindness, and will be missed by all those he touched throughout his life.
