OUR VIEW Our View: It's all cheers, no jeers from us today Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 29, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 29, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News It's exactly four weeks until Thanksgiving, but we thought we'd get a head start by being nothing but thankful today — a bunch of cheers, no jeers (go ahead, call us Pollyannas): A BIG CHEER for 4-year-old Helen Lynn of Medford, who last week was the beneficiary of a kidney transplant that will allow her to be off dialysis for the first time in more than two years. Helen, who was suffering kidney failure as the result of an E. coli infection, spent those two years in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals. And a double cheer for Lori Moyer of Healy, Alaska, who heard of the little girl's plight and volunteered to donate one of her kidneys, which proved to be a match. CHEERS for Medford's small, but growing technology cluster in downtown. Coding Zeal, CBT Nuggets and Lifeline Computer Solutions are all within a 30-second walk of each other near the heart of Medford. They join Procare Software, one of the main tenants in the One West Main building, in creating a bit of a tech buzz and reinforcing the idea that things do indeed look different in downtown Medford. CHEERS , speaking of downtown looking different, for the new food truck gathering at the corner of Fir and Eighth streets. Up to seven different food trucks have set up shop on a former used car lot, offering delectable dishes to downtown workers and passersby. Conveniently located near the One West Main building and county and city offices (and the Mail Tribune!), the vendors are open from at least 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, with some open on the weekends and considering test runs on Friday and Saturday nights. Do your bit to support Medford's latest piece of urban cool and try out their menus. CHEERS to Costco's plans to locate its new store near the intersection of Pine Street and Table Rock Road in east Central Point. While some are bemoaning the fact that a Medford store will transplant to Central Point, it will be scarcely any farther from the center of Medford than is its current Highway 62 location. The new and bigger location will have the advantage of nearby freeway access, plus access from Medford via Biddle and Table Rock roads. It's clearly an improvement in terms of traffic over the previously proposed site in Medford's Northgate Centre, which would have faced some serious congestion issues. AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, CHEERS to Tim George, Medford's police chief, who has announced he will retire Dec. 1. George has been a visible and energetic chief and has ensured that his department is as open to community scrutiny as possible. Police departments by their nature must deal with a lot of unhappy and unsavory issues, but George — who years ago was the department's public information officer — has kept the information coming and the community informed, even when it might not have been comfortable to do so. We wish him well and encourage his successor, whoever that may be, to follow his lead.
