Churchill whips North by 75 EUGENE � North Medford High boys basketball coach Gene Quilhaugh seemed remarkably upbeat for someone whose team had just lost by 75 points. The No. 3-ranked Churchill Lancers routed the Black Tornado 102-27 on Saturday night, handing Quilhaugh his worst loss in 24 years of coaching. Drew Summers registered a game-high 27 points for the Lancers, who burst to a 29-3 advantage after one quarter and led 54-10 at halftime. Quilhaugh took the thrashing philosophically, knowing that several of his starters have yet to suit up after playing in last weekend�s state championship football game. "I�m not the least bit upset with their coach (John Roche) or how they approached the game," said Quilhaugh, whose team fell to 0-5. "He played his starters for 2� quarters and then cleared the bench. "They ran one offense and we failed to stop it. "They�re a very talented team. They�ve got eight kids who could start for almost anyone." Gabe Burchfiel logged a strong performance for the Tornado with 12 points and eight rebounds, but the 6-foot-4 junior post was no match for the depth-laden Lancers. Jordan Kent, a son of University of Oregon coach Ernie Kent, backed up Summers with 17 points. Ethan Ralston added 12 and Jeff Rhode and Brett Smith had 10 each. Chuchill shot 56 percent from the field. The Tornado football players � Mike Olson, Kevin Foreman, Travis Poulton and Brian Weeks � will gather for an informal practice with Quilhaugh today and go through a full workout Monday. North Medford meets Lebanon on Tuesday and Quilhaugh said the football players will see action even though Olson, Foreman and Poulton are all battling minor injuries. Churchill, which also had several players missing early while playing football, evened its record at 2-2. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 64, ROGUE RIVER 62 � At Cave Junction, Cascade Christian used a big advantage at the foul line and Stan Kelley scored 17 points as the Challengers eked out a victory over Rogue River in the consolation game of the Illinois Valley Holiday Tournament. Cascade Christian took advantage of the foul-plagued Chieftains by making 21 of 40 free throws. Rogue River was 13 of 19 from the charity stripe. Rogue River�s Jason Luchterhand hit a layup with four seconds remaining that cut Cascade�s lead to 64-62, but the Chiefs didn�t have any timeouts left and the Challengers (4-4) allowed the clock to run out without inbounding the ball. Luchterhand scored a game-high 28 points for the Chieftains, who saw their record fall to 1-4.
