EMERGENCY RESPONSE Grass fire, power outage snarl Medford traffic Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 5, 2016 at 7:59 PM Posted Jul. 5, 2016 at 7:59 PM » Social News A small but pesky and potent grass and brush fire tossed a thick enough plume of smoke this evening near Interstate 5's North Medford Interchange to cause traffic delays for close to an hour. The 6:45 p.m. fire was in the Railroad Park area off Berrydale Drive near Medford's Big X Interchange. Medford Fire & Rescue fire trucks and their crews used long hoses from several vantage points to douse the quickly moving flames. However, the plumes were strong enough spill over onto I-5 and Crater Lake Highway, causing traffic halts and detours for safety. To make matters worse, a electricity interruption at a Pacific Power substation cut power to more than 4,500 customers in west Medford, including darkening stop lights intermittently across stretches of the city, according to Pacific Power. Motorists on some main streets were able to see their traffic lights in operation, but several side streets off West Main and West Eighth streets were dark for more than two hours and counting as crews worked to restore power. There was no estimate on when full power would be restored to the affected area, which was all within the 97501 zip code, according to Pacific Power.
