The fire burned 10 acres of grass and live oak on steep hillsides east of Interstate 5 before it was corralled about 5 p.m., said John Fitzpatrick, command center chief at the California Department of Forestry office in Yreka. People traveling on the freeway reported a small roadside fire between 3 and 3:30 p.m., he said. Flames raced up the slopes, briefly threatening several homes before firefighters knocked it back, Fitzpatrick said. No buildings were damaged. The California Department of Forestry, the Oregon Department of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service and volunteer fire departments in both Siskiyou and Jackson County all provided equipment and firefighters. The fire was in a "mutual threat zone" along the California-Oregon border, so both states attack fires in that area, said Oregon forestry department fire-prevention specialist Dennis Turco.
