He was born September 30, 1948 to Ray and Halie Maurer in Silverton, Ore. Much of Andy’s early life was spent in Prospect, Ore. where his father worked in the logging industry. He was the eldest of five boys and one girl. At Prospect Junior High School, Andy met his future wife, Jean Grigsby. The two began a friendship that blossomed into love, sealed by the union of marriage. Andy earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Oregon. From there, Andy was the 64th player chosen in the 1970 NFL draft. Andy played nine seasons in the NFL for five different teams (Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, and the Denver Broncos.) He played in two Super Bowls, starting at guard in Super Bowl IX for the Minnesota Vikings and starting at tackle in Super Bowl XII for the Denver Broncos. God used Andy’s athletic prowess to shape the man and the legacy we honor today, and forever. With the countless players he coached, his leadership foundation remained consistent: faith, integrity, courage, and truth. To many who reflect, Andy was “Coach," not only on the field, but in life. Andy was a God-inspired leader. Andy was preceded in death by his father, Ray Maurer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean of Medford; his three children, Cynde Maurer of Medford, Jolene (Korby) Wallace of Medford, and Marty (Brandi) Maurer of Medford; his mother, Halie Maurer of Prospect; his five siblings, Mike Maurer (Kim) of Kenai, Alaska, Richard “Dick” Maurer (Sue) of Medford, Ken Maurer (Diana) of Vancouver, Wash., Ron Maurer (Mary) of Bend, and Lori Bigham (Steve) of Reno, Nev.; his seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 8, 2016 at Applegate Christian Fellowship.
