Embarking on its first year, the Gold Hill Growers and Crafters Market began in early summer under management of members of the Odd Fellows Lodge. The group is being grown and revived under a small band on enthusiastic organizers after fears of closure and loss of the historic building. The market — held every Monday — is one means of breathing new life into the lodge property and inching the small membership toward financial stability. After a trial-and-error year of sorts, organizers hope the market will round out the offerings in the Rogue Valley's lineup of markets with its less traditional scheduling and expanded flea market- and crafter-type offerings in addition to produce. Vendors have run the gamut from produce and vintage jewelry to custom fishing lures and resale clothing. Market organizer and Gold Hill resident Deb West said she is excited to add the first of what she hopes are many events hosted by the Odd Fellows. West hopes being scheduled on a day no other markets are held with give the market a competitive spot in the valley's many events and attract plenty of vendors. "We have had a half-dozen or so loyal vendors that are showing up. We want the market to grow vendors and customers simultaneously, but word is definitely getting out," she said. "I've got produce vendors, crafting vendors, some vintage stuff ... we have a lot of variety. People are starting to notice we're there. All of the other markets are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and all in the morning, so people that work can't make it. We thought it made sense to do an afternoon market." Central Point resident Sandy Stater, who grew up in Gold Hill and reworks vintage jewelry into new pieces, said the market was a great asset for the town. "I think it's a really cheerful little spot. Even little kids come down with their dollars to buy things and to see everything we have. I always have a table of kid stuff for a dollar. We're all hoping something really great is going to come of this little market," Stater said. "I think having a Monday market will get people to wake up a bit and start off the week. I have done markets all over, but I'm only going to do the one in Gold Hill now. I think this could be a really great this for this little town." Lodge member and vendor Richard Davis, who hosts a booth with fishing lures and spinners, said he was hopeful for the success of the market for both the community and the lodge's benefit. "We're just trying to get something going for the good of the community. It'll really help for us to get the word out and get a list of reliable vendors to show up," Davis said. "Hopefully, we can keep the crafters aspect of it going into the winter even when there's no produce. We're trying to breathe some life into our historic building. Most everybody seems happy we're doing what we're doing, so we'll just keep going from there." West said she planned a fall coloring contest and pumpkin events toward late October and possibly spaghetti dinners if a food vendor can be secured. Vendor booths are $15 for non-lodge members and $10 for lodge members. "I'm going to go until the end of October, at least. Weather permitting, we could go a little longer. We'll just be there until everyone is out of produce and they stop showing up. Who knows after that, maybe a winter market?" Buffy Pollock is a freelance writer living in Medford.
