"Who knows what's going to happen." Illinois Valley took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, tallied again early in the fourth and didn't let the Mustangs into the end zone until only three seconds remained. The Cougars are 4-2, 1-1 in the Skyline, while Hidden Valley dropped to 5-2, 1-1. No. 10 North Valley was the other ranked Skyline team to lose, falling 24-0 to Henley. Advertisement Thornhill was aware his team was considered an underdog entering the contest. "And lo and behold," he said, "the kids stepped up and had their best game of the season. I don't think Hidden Valley had their best game, but I'm absolutely happy with the kids for playing a full four quarters for the first time this season. I couldn't be happier." Illinois Valley limited the Mustangs to 181 totals yards and only 55 on the ground on 23 rushing attempts. Middle linebacker Austin Hocker "made himself a big-time linebacker tonight," said Thornhill, after Hocker spearheaded a defense that neutralized Hidden Valley's power running attack. Cornerbacks Sam Winter and Jarred Miller were also strong against the run. On offense, IV ran for 220 yards on 50 carries, getting 120 from Adam Miller on 28 totes. Miller scored both Cougar touchdowns from a yard out. Dustin Mathews found paydirt for Hidden Valley on a 10-yard pass from L.B. Draper. The Mustangs were hurt by 10 penalties for 60 yards. Kory Locken and Matt Wiegand each tallied twice for the Pirates (3-3, 2-0 Skyline), and Kyle Giron lofted two touchdown passes. Phoenix led 47-6 at halftime. Wiegand had 103 yards rushing on 11 carries, and Quinton Walker had 102 on two carries — including a 94-yard touchdown run. Giron was 4-for-4 passing for 82 yards and TD strikes to Josh Dungannon and Alex Calkins. Phoenix's Jack Elam returned an interception 20 yards for the game's final score. Rogue River's touchdown came on a 20-yard pass from Chris Burman to Ryan Friend. The Chieftains are 0-6, 0-2. Rockey Rosser had nine carries for 36 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns, including a 19-yard scamper which gave the Hornets a 17-0 lead in the fourth quarter. Kelly Shannon ripped off 107 yards on the ground for Henley, which held North Valley to 144 total yards. The Hornets' Erick Schneider capped the fourth quarter with a 15-yard interception return. Keith Suit led the Knights (4-2, 1-1 Skyline Conference) in rushing with 67 yards on 14 attempts.
