Kelly has fearlessly become a force in the Rogue Valley as a singer, bandleader, model and actress, and she keeps moving forward toward higher goals. It was acting that brought Kelly to Ashland, where she enrolled in the acting program at Southern Oregon University in 2003. During her studies at SOU Theatre Arts, she performed in the musical "Quilters," playwright David Edgar's "Entertaining Strangers," Bertholt Brecht's and Kurt Weill's "The Three Penny Opera" and a host of other stage productions. After graduation, she joined guitarist Tim Church and bassist Michael Barth to perform with the Paul Schmeling Trio, a lounge act that can be heard most Monday nights at Martino's in Ashland. Soon, she formed her own band, called Local Potion, with guitarist Jeff Stanley, drummer Matthew Kriemelman and bass player Jacob Ackerman. She also sat in on vocals with The Modern Prometheus Jazz Co., Dal Carver's The Wild Goose Trio, Alan Berman's piano trio and the Robbie DaCosta Trio. In 2012, she formed the Danielle Kelly Jazz Project with guitarist Paul Turnipseed and bassist Jeff Addicott. Its focus was on the music of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Kraal — some of Kelly's favorite singers. Next came The D.K. Soul Project with guitarist Turnipseed, drummer Kriemelman, Gordon Greenley on sax and Richard Meyer on bass. The band looked at the music of Motown, Stax and Atlantic recordings and provided a forum for dancers. "I want to keep my hand in live entertainment," Kelly says. "Playing the music I love, hoping to make people dance. There's nothing more rewarding than working with amazing musicians helping to actualize my musical ideas. I think what we play is special, music that's accessible to people. My goal is to perform in more prestigious venues, festivals and concerts. The Rogue Valley is a special place with its abundance of talent and enthusiastic fan support. I feel lucky to live here." Between working with her many music projects, Kelly has had opportunities to appear in music videos with rock groups Moby and The Janks and in films "Black Road" (2014), "Vampire Camp" (2012) and "Party Girl" (2008), as well as television commercials and magazine ads. Her recent promo video, created at BrokenWorks Productions in Ashland, has garnered interest from a recording studio in Los Angeles with ties to Universal Studios, and Kelly has been invited to visit the studio and perform gigs in the L.A. area. "Soul speaks to me the most," she says. "I also love the jazz standards that are so open to improvisation." Working in a male-dominated field poses challenges for Kelly. "There is definitely sexism out there," Kelly says. "I've experienced it in bands and nightclubs. I refuse to give it any energy or credence. Ignoring it devalues the whole idea. It's my responsibility as an artist to develop my professionalism to an ever higher level. I'm hungry to collaborate with artists, musicians, actors — even visual artists — on any project, as long as there is a fire under it."
