The Knights entered the road game undefeated in the Skyline Conference and riding a three-game winning streak. But the Vikings ended all that with a 28-7 victory Friday. "We’ve had their number the past three years," Mazama coach John Mathis said. "This was a must-win for us." Mazama (3-3, 2-2 Skyline) took control from the start by scoring on its first four possessions. Advertisement "We went out and executed the way we were capable of for the first time this season," Mathis said. "That plus not committing turnovers or getting penalties was key for us." The Vikings pounded out 175 yards on the ground, led by 103 yards from Garrett Poetsch. Senior quarterback Jared Caulfield rushed for two touchdowns and found tight end Levi Durighello in the end zone for another score. Trailing by four scores, North Valley (3-3, 3-1 Skyline) looked to the air for a comeback. Senior wide receiver Anthony Spain caught 12 passes for 131 yards and quarterback Josh Makepeace was 14- for-23 for 146 yards. "They didn’t try to threaten us deep, which helped us in a way," Mathis said. "We were playing pretty conservative offensively and had some three-and-outs, but fortunately our defense stepped up big." Junior running back Greg Richardson helped make up for North Valley’s minus-15 rushing yards in the first half by running for 112 yards and a 9-yard score in the second half. But the Knights hurt themselves with two interceptions and a fumble. North Valley fell into a tie for first place with Hidden Valley, while Mazama climbed back into the playoff race with a visit to Phoenix looming next Friday. Ryan Harvey tacked on a 27-yard field goal right at the end of the half to increase the Pirates’ advantage to 30-21. Phoenix junior Tyler Hammon, who moved into the featured running back role after Max Boots was injured for the season two weeks ago against North Valley, rushed for three TDs and 137 yards.
