Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 25, 2005 Jack Spring blaze snuffed Crews have contained the 17-acre fire that sparked Tuesday afternoon alongside Highway 140 east of Lake Creek. The Jack Spring fire was originally estimated at between 30 to 33 acres, but the size was revised overnight, said Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou. "It’s pretty much a done deal," Ballou said of the firefighting operations. Fire crews made good progress on the blaze Tuesday night and began "mop-up" operations Wednesday, Ballou said. The highway, reduced to a single lane Tuesday, has been re-opened, but motorists are urged to use caution in the fire areas, Ballou said. No structures were threatened by the blaze, which burned on private forestland. Advertisement The Lake Creek Rural Fire Protection District and engines from the U.S. Forest Service assisted ODF crews in the "mop-up". Equipment and crews have been contracted for the mop-up and patrolling the fire, enabling first-response units to return to their normal patrol areas, Ballou said. Three helicopters and an air tanker Tuesday hit the fire with retardant and water. Ground forces consisted of two 20-man ODF crews and Lake Creek Rural Fire Protection District units, Ballou said. This was the second fire this season along Highway 140 near Lake Creek. In July, the 1,520-acre Wasson fire threatened two structures, including an exotic animal sanctuary west of Lake Creek. It was sparked by a rollover accident along the highway. The cause of the most recent fire remains under investigation, officials said Wednesday.
