Lightheart submitted her letter of resignation to board Chairman Jeff Thomas earlier this month, and at Monday’s meeting the board will discuss its plans for filling the vacancy. Lightheart’s resignation will be effective June 15, just a year after she was elected to the four-year position. All six of her children have attended Medford schools, and in June her third child will graduate from North Medford High School. “We are moving to Idaho Falls right after the school year is over,” she said. “My husband is starting a new job there July 1. “I have enjoyed (this position) so much. I have learned so much and gotten to know some great people who are trying to do what’s best for the students in this district,” Lightheart said. In the past when a position has been vacated midterm, the board has advertised the vacancy on the district’s website, accepted applications and interviewed candidates before making its selection. “We’ll discuss the process at Monday’s meeting and make a decision to move forward with the process the board agrees on,” Thomas said. “We can’t appoint a new person to the board until June 16.” That person will serve as an appointed official until the next election in May 2017, at which point they will have run for election, Thomas said. Candidates need to be residents within the school district boundaries for at least the past year, and may not be a paid district employee. Board members are volunteers. They are expected to attend two public meetings per month and periodic meetings with the superintendent. They are also expected to work on special committees and attend occasional conferences. The meeting Monday will be held at 7 p.m. in the district boardroom at 815 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford. —Reach education reporter Teresa Thomas at 541-776-4497 or [email protected] .
