Humane Society falls short of goal The Southern Oregon Humane Society fell almost a third short of a $90,000 goal in its first major fund-raising campaign. The society collected $66,000 in donations, 73 percent of its goal, in the last months of 1999, said Kathy Pilolla, communications and development director. "We didn't realize how much people did not understand what the Humane Society was," Pilolla said. "The fall campaign set a level of expectation among the community and helped educate people about what our needs are." Pilolla said the shortfall would not eliminate any society programs or plans, but "it may slow us down a little." A spring drive is set to begin in April. The society plans two fund drives annually in the future, Pilolla said. The fall drive was the society's first major fund-raising campaign in its 72-year history. The society operates a shelter and adoption service at 2910 Table Rock Road for displaced pets and conducts spay and neuter programs. About 30 percent of the society's $290,000 annual budget comes from adoption and intake fees, with the remaining 70 percent from donations.
