St. Mary's girls pull off upset of Hidden Valley in District 6 MURPHY � Emily Smith and Annie Maurer were impact players as St. Mary�s upset Hidden Valley 3-2 and registered its first District 5 girls soccer victory Saturday. Smith was involved in all the Crusaders (4-1-3, 1-1 District 5) scoring, with two goals and an assist, and Maurer was a stalwart in the net. Smith scored the winning goal at the 65th minute when she followed her shot that deflected off Mustang goalie Sheena Gannon and put it in from close range. "She�s a real quick forward," St. Mary�s coach George Tiger said. "She breaks down the defense with that quickness." Tiger estimates the Mustangs outshot his squad by a 2-1 ratio, but Maurer proved to be the equalizer. "There were some shots that should have gone in, but she (Maurer) saved them for us," said Tiger. "She had spectacular positioning." Kara Schnoes gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead one minute into the contest when she scored from 10 yards on an opportunity created by Smith. Shea Ford�s header off a corner kick by Kim Hill knotted the score at 1. St. Mary�s led 2-1 at halftime off a Smith goal at the 35th minute. Hidden Valley answered early in the second half when Hill�s corner kick set up Gina Anderson�s goal. Tiger credited junior midfielder Nellie Barnard and freshman fullback Alex Thomlinson with making some important contributions to the Crusaders� victory. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 � Kali Warren scored two goals close together in the first half to give the senior forward 11 on the season in the District 5 match at Hawthorne Park. Warren dribbled through several defenders and scored at the 17th minute. Then on the ensuing kickoff, Warren intercepted a pass and again took it down the field for a score. The Challengers (5-2, 1-2 District 5) led 2-0 at halftime. About midway through the second period, Carrie Longan tallied the final goal on a direct kick from 20 yards out. Freshman defender MacKenzie Ennis moved into the Challengers� starting lineup because of the absence of two starters and helped shut down the Illinois Valley attack. NORTH VALLEY 8, ROGUE RIVER 0 � At Rogue River, junior Malloree Enoch had four goals to lead North Valley to a dominant conference win. Senior Andee Trader added two goals for the Knights. North Valley had a 27-2 edge in shots on goal. HENLEY 2, MAZAMA 1 � At Klamath Falls, sophomore Becky Schwartz scored the winning goal with 20 minutes left to keep Mazama winless in league. Mazama (0-3 Skyline) took a 1-0 lead with a goal by junior Brea Miller. Henley�s Chrissy Giavia, junior, tied the game in the first half.
