COLLEGE ROUNDUP: SOU edges Rocky to sweep weekend By SOU Sports Information Updated: Oct 01, 2022 08:31 PM A A ASHLAND — Sky Charley-Bolyard and the Southern Oregon men’s soccer team had the final say on a testy and wild afternoon with Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Saturday at Raider Stadium. Charley-Bolyard deposited the lone goal in the 81st minute for a 1-0 win, the Raiders’ third straight after a slow start. The sophomore defender struck right in front of the net at the end of a frenzied sequence that began with Adrian Villegas’ corner kick, making SOU 6-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Villegas’ corner went to the top of the box to Izaiha Bruce, who sent forward a header that was gathered by a sliding Evan Norconk in a crowd. Charley-Bolyard took the ball right off Norconk’s feet and directed it in for his first goal in 25 career appearances. The Battlin’ Bears were shut out for the second day in a row. They fell to 5-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the CCC. A six-point weekend put the Raiders in fourth place on the CCC table heading into road contests next week at Carroll (Mont.) and Walla Walla (Wash.). The game featured 12 yellow cards and several missed opportunities as the teams combined for 29 shots. Freshman keeper Casey Ruvolo preserved SOU’s clean sheet with four saves, the last on a dive to deny Quique Garcia’s header with less than two minutes remaining. Prior to that, with the game still tied in the 76th minute, defender Omar Ramirez came through when Ruvolo was drawn out to head away with his feet planted at the goal line Niklas Kneller’s close-up attempt. The back line helped SOU survive nine Rocky corner kicks. Women’s Soccer SOU 1, ROCKY MOUNTAIN (MONT.) 0: At Ashland, Gabbie Johnson played the hero for streaking Southern Oregon, sticking the lone goal in the 78th minute for a win in Cascade Conference play at Raider Stadium. Johnson, a senior forward from Redding, Calif., beat two defenders to chase down a ball cleared high in the air from midfield by Malaika Quigley, gathering and striking 10 yards off of the left end line. Her shot caught Battlin’ Bears keeper Mila Allison off guard, bounced once and snuck inside the right post. The Raiders (4-4-2 overall, 3-1-1 CCC) enjoyed a six-point weekend, completing the sweep after defeating Providence (Mont.) 4-0 on Friday. They’ve gone 3-0-1 over their last four games — bouncing back from an 0-3-1 stretch that preceded this one. The Bears (2-5-3, 0-3-2) have still yet to score in five CCC outings. They were frustrated again, especially as Halle Labert hit the crossbar on laser shots in both halves. SOU keeper Jessie Selby didn’t help their cause. The senior made five saves for her third shutout of the season and the team’s third in a row. Sophia Connell also stood out on the back line as RMC put just five of its 15 shots on goal. Volleyball SOU 3, WARNER PACIFIC 0 : At Ashland, Sadie Byrd was in on seven of Southern Oregon’s 11 blocks as the No. 23-ranked Raiders dominated at the net and pushed Warner Pacific to a negative attacking average in a 25-15, 25-9, 25-14 sweep at Lithia Motors Pavilion. The Raiders’ perfect weekend made them 13-5 overall and 7-4 in the Cascade Conference, putting them at third place in the standings through the first half of CCC play. The Knights, who dropped to 1-10, had 27 attacking errors compared to 22 kills to hit negative-.056, the lowest clip for an SOU opponent this season. Byrd went for five kills in addition to her match-high block total, and Taylor Jackson added four blocks and a service ace. Carol Melo and Hailey Van Well had three blocks apiece. Van Well also totaled 10 kills, delivering seven of them in the lopsided second set. Katie Vroman had her best attacking night of the season, going for eight kills and no errors on 12 swings. She also assisted two blocks. Gwen Sheldon registered 13 assists and four digs and Hannah Randall had 12 assists and six digs, leading the Raiders to a .308 attack. Kayla Neidigh chipped in eight digs and Trinity Atuatasi collected six. Tevlin Britton led WPU with 11 kills and Sabah Mohammady checked in with 10 digs. LINN-BENTON 3, RCC 2: At Albany, Rogue Valley Community College pushed top-ranked Linn-Benton to its limit, but ultimately fell to the defending NWAC champions 10-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-20. With the loss, the Ospreys fell to 6-12 overall and 3-3 in NWAC play.
