Pedro Torres-Juarez, 73, was arraigned and indicted Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court on felony charges of manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine in the fall of 1998. He was booked in jail Thursday, where he remained as of Saturday on $100,000 bail. Torres-Juarez was extradited from Nevada to Jackson County earlier this month, Deputy Chief District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz said, after the DA's office expanded Torres-Juarez's 1998 arrest warrant to additional states on April 1 of this year. Court documents say Torres-Juarez's crime is still prosecutable and that Torres-Juarez could face prison for the crime. Markiewicz said they expanded Torres-Juarez's warrant to Nevada after law enforcement officials alerted the DA's office that Torres-Juarez was was scheduled to fly into Reno on April 1. Markiewicz was unable to specify further who the officials who tipped off the DA's office were. According to court documents, Torres-Juarez was arrested in October 1998 on charges of manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine. The Jackson County Narcotic Enforcement Team, a predecessor to the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement team, searched Torres-Juarez's Talent apartment in the first block of Talent Avenue on Oct. 20, 1998, where Jacnet allegedly found more than an ounce of meth, packaging material, a set of scales and $1,884 in cash. Torres-Juarez allegedly admitted to possessing the meth after being read his Miranda rights, but denied selling it, the 1998 affidavit says. Torres-Juarez later posted bail, which he forfeited after failing to appear to a Nov. 12, 1998 court appearance. Documents show his defense attorney dropped Torres-Juarez in November 1998 because he never paid his initial retainer. Court documents were sealed for a separate open felony case charging distribution and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance on Sept. 3, 1998. He pleaded not guilty to the charge in 1998, but failed to appear in court on the charges in 1999. Because the case is still open, Markiewicz couldn't speak about case specifics, but he said 18 years later the DA's office still has the bulk of witnesses available to testify. "The majority of witnesses involved in this case are still around," Markiewicz said. Prosecuting fugitives from old cases is relatively common, Markiewicz said, but the said the age of Torres-Juarez's case is unusual. "It's very rare to see a 1990s case," Markiewicz said.
