An update on empty storefronts Since plans have been announced for the Medford Center stores, any word or speculation on what is going into the old Future Shop site or the two vacant supermarkets -- Albertson's on Biddle Road or the old Cantwell's on Black Oak Drive? -- William F., Medford Unfortunately, there's not a lot of news to report on those fronts, William. No tenants have signed leases for those spaces, but here's what we found out about the progress. Though it closed a year ago, Future Shop still holds a lease on the 25,400-square-foot building in Crater Lake Plaza. In December, the company said it had spoken to several retailers, including Old Navy, about entering a sublease on it. Future Shop officials could not be reached to comment this week. A representative who handles openings for Old Navy says the company is considering the space but no lease has been signed. She says that, if all goes well, a store could open in Medford by this fall. The Albertson's store that closed this year at Bear Creek Plaza isn't expected to stay empty long. Commercial real estate agents have been told it's spoken for. Jeff Stauffer of Pan Pacific Retail Properties, which owns the plaza, says he hopes to have an announcement in coming weeks but that he can't say anything just yet about who might be moving into the space. The former Cantwell's Market on Black Oak has been vacant the longest, having closed in September 1998. Curt Johnson, the real estate agent trying to lease the 25,000-square-foot space, says he's had interest but no takers. "We've had some different people look at it," he says, noting it's been considered as a grocery store, general merchandise store and a call center. "We've got interest but nothing to write home about just yet." (Send your questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
