Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 8, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jan. 8, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Can you tell me more about all the houses and properties that the Jackson County Sheriff's Department is auctioning off?  — Donald, Eagle Point The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is tasked with auctioning off many of the homes in the county that fall into foreclosure. The office is legally required to publish notices of the auctions, and those notices run as classified advertisements in the Mail Tribune, which is likely where you spotted them, Donald. A recent wave of notices in the newspaper was likely the result of the department hiring a second clerk to handle the foreclosures. The two clerks worked extra hours over the holidays, said Sergeant Bob Grantham. "We have a major backlog. We recently added another clerk. They are working extra hard to beat this backlog down," he said. Before the housing crash and recession of 2008, the sheriff's department handled only about a dozen foreclosures a year. That number has now climbed to 200 or 300 annually, Grantham estimated. Statewide, sheriffs' departments handled 390 foreclosure sales in 2012. Numbers skyrocketed to 3,203 foreclosure sales in 2013 and an estimated 7,750 such sales in 2014, he said. Sheriffs' departments are handling more foreclosure sales than in the past primarily due to a court case that shifted more of the burden to sheriffs' auctions and away from trustee sales, Grantham said. Although the economy is recovering, the foreclosure process is lengthy, which also could partially account for the increased number of foreclosure sales handled by sheriffs' departments in the last few years. Grantham said the Jackson County Sheriff's Department is allowed to recover some of its costs for handling foreclosure auctions from the sale of properties. Buyers who take part in the department's foreclosure auctions must pay in cash or with cashier's checks. The money is handed over to a court for disbursement, Grantham said.
