"Taps" is sounded on a bugle. The bugle has no keys. It is the simplest bugle call. It uses four notes of the musical scale. The bugle signals the end of the day; all is at rest and all is well. It is for the soldiers. These sorrowful notes are for all who fought America's wars and served honorably. It is a psalm that will always be there. Veterans and soldiers will listen, and hearing the words and notes will pierce their hearts for all of their lives. Listen! Day is done Gone the sun From the lake From the hill From the sky Rest in peace Soldiers brave God is nigh The notes fade into the sunset, touched lovingly adrift into the silence of air by the lone bugler, who lets out notes to linger and brings tears. As veterans listen, they know it is a salute for them. Freedom is not free. Richard G. Joshua, Vietnam veteran, U.S. Air Force Medford Arm the Peshmerga Why does America insist on arming Baghdad/Iraqi Army when they consistently and without fail give up and let the Islamic State take over, city by city, and along with that, take all the Iraqi and American weaponry? Huh, why is that? Arm the Kurds/Peshmerga and let them take care of business, as they've done time and time again with what little they have. If the Peshmerga had American weapons, we wouldn't see IS continually taking large swaths of Iraqi territory. This isn't hard, Obama, wake up! Arm the good guys, the Kurds, and let's win this fight! Steve Ryan Medford Speak English I wholeheartedly agree with Judith Burgess on her May 18 letter. They want all the benefits the government offers them, so I feel they should speak English. A. Adams Butte Falls Pray for U.S. I dislike writing this letter to the editor, but it must be said. Our nation is in a perilous crisis, one that is so severe that many letters and books are predicting a collapse of the dollar and a crash of the stock market. They make a credible case. It does sound impossible to pay off the national debt of $18 trillion and live on a reasonable budget. What these writers have to say is very depressing. But, there is hope. and it comes from a verse in the Bible, given to a prophet by God. It says, in 2nd Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and heal their land." Pray for our nation. Gordon DeVos Medford Road work endless I don't know the details of the months-long construction on the three-tenths of a mile section of Freeman Road, but I believe that 100 Egyptian pyramid laborers in loincloths with shovels and their daily ration of beer would have completed it by now. The city fathers should consider changing the name of that section to "Road Closed To Through Traffic" and all side streets to "Detour" because that's what locals now know them as.
