RiverDogs blank Wildcats The Southern Oregon RiverDogs are in a winning groove. The RiverDogs registered their fifth consecutive victory by blanking the Portland Wildcats 11-0 in amateur baseball at Miles Field Thursday. Andy Bartels (1-0) pitched seven strong innings in his first start of the season. Bartels, whose other four appearances this season have been in relief, allowed three hits and struck out five. Steve Pergin and Jesse Stevenson each tossed one inning of relief to complete the RiverDogs first shutout of the season. Southern Oregon held a 2-0 lead when it put together six straight hits with two outs and scored five runs in the fourth inning. K.C. Rumrey got the rally started with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. Don Jenkins followed with a RBI single, Nate Mayben singled and Steve DeClerck provided a run-scoring single. Ryan Wilson smacked a two-run triple and Tim Alvarez completed the outburst with a RBI single. Alvarez led the 12-hit attack with a 2-for-3, two RBI effort, while DeClerck and Mayben each added two hits and one RBI. Southern Oregon (13-11) hosts Portland in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. today at Miles Field and completes the four-game series against Portland with a single game at noon Saturday. BABE RUTH DISTRICT TOURNAMENT - At Ashland, starting pitcher Tyler Heil limited Ashland to three hits in four innings and also went 2-for-2 as the Medford 13-year-old All-Stars won its opener 17-1 in the five team double-elimination tournament at North Mountain Park. Heil provided a two-run double and Johan Holtz collected two hits and one RBI for Medford. Neil Smith completed the five-inning game for Medford, whose next contest will be Saturday. The winner of the district tournament advances to the South State Tournament beginning July 25 at Klamath Falls. DISTRICT 6 BOYS LITTLE LEAGUE - At White City, the Medford American 12-year-olds defeated Or/Cal 10-5 to advance into the championship round of the double elimination tournament. Medford, which lost to Klamath Falls South Suburban 7-4 in the third round, plays the Klamath Falls squad again at 6 p.m. today. Medford needs to defeat undefeated Klamath Falls twice to advance to the state tournament. Against Or/Cal, Zach Robinson, who relieved Zack Earle in the third inning, picked up the win. Medford's Trenton Smith and John Adamson each reached base safely three times and scored a run. Smith collected three RBIs, Adamson provided two RBIs and Shae Bedortha added a double with two RBIs. Medford sent 11 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning and scored six runs to take the lead for good.
