SCHOOL SHOOTING Ashland cancels homecoming parade after 'alarming' Facebook remark Comment By Staff report MailTribune.com By Staff report Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 5:09 PM Updated Oct 2, 2015 at 9:55 AM By Staff report Posted Oct. 1, 2015 at 5:09 PM Updated Oct 2, 2015 at 9:55 AM » Social News In the wake of a shooting that killed at least 10 people on the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg on Thursday, Ashland High School canceled its homecoming parade after Ashland police got information about a former student making indirectly threatening remarks. Ashland police reported that around 1 p.m. Thursday, a former Ashland resident emailed them screenshots of a former Ashland High School student’s Facebook page with a photo of a firearm and two statements alluding to a desire to exact revenge on people in his life. Police described the comments as "somewhat threatening and alarming." Police determined that the gun photo was widely available online and hadn't been taken by the person who posted the vague threats, but authorities didn't want to take chances. A news release explained "while the situation did not represent a direct, articulated threat," it raised enough concern to prompt precautions. Police and school officials canceled the homecoming parade, which was set to start at 2:30 p.m. Officers were posted at the school as classes let out for the day. Students were held an extra 10 minutes to ensure their safety, but buses ran on their regular routes. The parade will be rescheduled, and all other school events are proceeding as planned, a news release about the incident reported. Ashland police believe they have identified the man who posted the images and statements, and detectives are working to find him, the news release said. "We do have some alumni that attend school (at Umpqua Community college)," Ashland High School interim Principal Erika Bare told the Tidings. "I can't give out any names but we were definitely personally affected by the loss in Roseburg today. It was a rough day at Ashland High School today." She declined to elaborate on if any of the alumni were victims of the shooting. Bill Thorndike, chairman of the Southern Oregon University Board of Trustees, issued a statement Thursday saying that, on behalf of the trustees "and the entire SOU community, we offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were killed and injured in the shooting .... Our deepest sympathies are also with the entire UCC campus community, the city of Roseburg and beyond." In a Facebook post, SOU President Roy Saigo said, "Today's tragic events at Umpqua Community College affect me not only as a university president, but as a father. Many parents of SOU students are understandably upset and concerned about the safety of their children, and I want them to know that everyone's safety is my number-one priority." He added that if any students or staff "are feeling distressed and need additional support, please let us know so that we can connect you to the right resources and help you." SOU officials "have no reason to believe that there is any sort of threat to our campus," he added, and "SOU’s Campus Public Safety and Crisis Management Team are on alert and monitoring the situation closely in conjunction with local law enforcement." Tidings editor Bert Etling, web editor Anita Burke and reporter Joe Zavala contributed to this report.
