But the Axemen leaned on their airtight defense and used goals from Joe Claycomb and Conner Jones to post a 2-0 Southwest Conference victory at Hoffbuhr Field. "We had two or three good scoring chances, but their keeper (Brian Rowe) made a great save on one of them, and their defense closed down quickly on the others," said coach Matt Soper of North Medford (5-5-1, 3-4). "They're No. 1 for a reason." North Medford junior goalie Jayce Snyder performed superbly, registering four saves, including a penalty kick in the second half. South Eugene (11-0, 7-0 SWC) got on the board in the 16th minute when Claycomb stole the ball from a North Medford defender near the Tornado box and blasted home a shot from 8 yards out. "He (Jones) timed it perfectly." South Eugene beat the Tornado 5-0 earlier this season. "I think our grass field slowed them down quite a bit," Soper said. "They have great quickness, and they're used to playing on artificial turf." SOUTH MEDFORD 3, GRANTS PASS 1 — At Grants Pass, Dominique Agnimel netted two goals and Gilmar Lopez-Cruz added two assists to power South Medford. Skylar Holt kept the Cavemen out of the net until the 76th minute and recorded four saves for the Panthers (6-4-1, 5-2 SWC). Alex Arizaga added a goal in the 20th minute for South Medford. ROSEBURG 9, SHELDON 1 — At Eugene, sophomore forward Steven Strickland scored just two minutes into the match and Roseburg kept the heat on throughout in the SWC rout. Senior forward Luke Matthews had a hat trick for the Indians, and Strickland wound up with two goals. Arturo Ramirez, Taylor Martin, Aaron Funderburk and Lorenzo Vasqez also connected for the Indians (5-4-2, 4-3 SWC), who have won four straight since an 0-3 start in conference play. Roseburg led 5-1 at halftime. Ryan Recinos scored in the 27th minute for Sheldon (1-6 SWC). Southern Sky ASHLAND 1, CRATER 0 — At Central Point, Nate Roupp took advantage of a loose ball in front of the goal and scored in the 38th minute to give Ashland the SSC triumph. The Grizzlies' Brendan Golding took a shot that rebounded off a post, and Roupp was there to punch it into the net as Ashland improved to 4-0 in league and 8-0-1 overall. The Comets (2-5-1, 1-2 SSC) got strong play from sweeper Jason Pardee, outside fullback Jon Grether and defender Junior Iboa. KLAMATH UNION 5, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Eagle Point, Luis Ortega scored all five of Klamath Union's goals in the Southern Sky win. Sweeper Francisco Aranda had a strong game for Eagle Point (3-6, 0-3 SSC). Skyline HENLEY 4, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, senior forward Josh Golden scored two goals and assisted on another and junior goalie Max Malcolm recorded his fourth shutout of the season. After a scoreless first half, Golden scored in the 54th minute off an assist from Derick Hines. Golden converted three minutes later when Colton Hines provided the assist. Luke Harris' goal gave Henley (7-3, 4-1 Sky) a 3-0 lead, then Colton Hines finished the scoring with Golden getting the assist. Henley outshot North Valley, 13-5.
