City passes vendor law SHADY COVE -- Street vendors will have to set up shop on a paved parking lot and show proof of permission from the property owner now that the City Council has approved a new ordinance. The ordinance states that a vendor's mobile unit must not be larger than 128 square feet, must be situated at least six feet from the sidewalk and must be no closer than 500 feet from another vendor. Vendors must provide three paved parking spaces and trash bins and show proof of a temporary business license. If the business handles food, it must meet Jackson County Health Department standards. "This was intended to make it less attractive for those people who come into town and skim the cream off the top of our tourist business at the expense of our regular businesses in town," said Jerry L'Estrange, city administrator. Some vendors, such as the summer fish market that sets up at a gas station, have become a tradition in Shady Cove, said Wen McCaleb, a City Council member.
