Personally, I steer clear of Will and Krauthammer, rarely read Gerson or Parker, and always read Harrop, Lyons, Pitts and Milbank. Those last four columnists are a primary reason I subscribe to the daily MT. Regarding race, when heavily armed white men in cowboy hats are allowed to take over a federal facility and terrorize its employees and the public, and unarmed black men are routinely killed by policemen, incarcerated, and disenfranchised, I'd say race is something we need to look at in this country. And I don't mean the Academy Awards. Julia Sommer Ashland Letter was fabulous The "Wear a cowboy hat" commentary by Mary Wright was fabulous! She's so right and I'm surprised this "take" on the Malheur refuge occupation hasn't been noted by news stories. Perhaps another title could have been Cowboy Hats vs. Turbans. Editors: I appreciated you posting a "cluster" of letters commenting on Leonard Pitts' views. Katharine Sloan Medford Off by a mile In recent years I have become highly annoyed by poor grammar and vocabulary that I find in my excellent newspaper. My most recent peeve I found in an otherwise fine editorial on the Malheur Refuge standoff as taken from the Bend Bulletin. The journalist stated that Harney County is 10,000 miles square and Deschutes county is 3,000 miles square. I guess that the writer was sleeping in 11th grade geometry. 10,000 miles square is a whopping 100 million square miles. 3,000 miles square is a mere 9 million square miles. Where does such ignorance come from? Jim Britton Jacksonville A Butler for Pitts This is Pat Butler No. 2 speaking! I often agree with Pat Butler No. 1's opinions on various subjects, but not regarding Leonard Pitts. To my friends and acquaintances who will ask again, Pat Butler No. 2 did not write the MT letter to the editor on Feb. 1. Keep Leonard Pitts. Pat Butler No. 2 Medford New Hampshire Leading up to the New Hampshire primary, the news networks bombarded us (and the entire U.S.) with the opinions of New Hampshire's citizens that now leave many of us confounded. Legislators, residents, politicians, Republicans, Democrats, not to mention news commentators, seemed to share the same opinion: New Hampshirites are politically sophisticated, hard-nosed individuals who want to hear facts about what a presidential candidate stands for; they don't care what a candidate says, they care what (s)he will do; they support finding solutions over rhetoric; ... and more. And then? Donald Trump wins New Hampshire with 35 percent of the vote.
