Mayor Alan DeBoer sought Almquist for the post. Almquist will replace Greg Scoles, who announced his resignation Aug. 12. Scoles will become public works director for Santa Rosa, Calif., a booming city north of San Francisco with nearly 150,000 residents, according to the 2000 census. He was named Ashland’s city administrator in July 2000. Almquist, who lives in Ashland, served as administrator for 27 years until October 1997. He was interim administrator of Central Point from May until Friday. "My job is not to initiate any new projects, just to make sure everything gets done and within budget," said Almquist. "I think it’s pretty neat that Ashland has such a quality, part-time administrator living within our city limits," DeBoer said. Almquist will work on a part-time basis and be paid an hourly wage, DeBoer said. Scoles’ last day will be Oct. 11. Almquist estimates he could work until late March at the longest while a search for Scoles’ replacement is under way. "It generally takes five to five and one-half months if everything clicks right along," said Almquist. "I’ll have initial responsibilities in the budget process in January, but that doesn’t wrap up until June." A professional search firm will be used to assist in the search. Scoles and Personnel Analyst Tina Gray recommended two firms from proposals received. The firms would charge between $21,000 and $24,000. DeBoer will decided which firm to use Monday. Final choice for both the interim and the permanent position belongs to the mayor. DeBoer said he will use council members as a selection committee to recommend finalists. Citizens will have opportunities to tell the search firm what qualities they would like in an administrator.
