Mail Tribune 100: Aug. 15, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 15, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 15, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 15, 1916 CHIEF HITTSON BRINGS IN FIRST DEER OF SEASON The first deer of the season, a five-point buck, was brought in about 10 o'clock this morning by Chief of Police J. F. Hittson. In the party that left about 6 o'clock yesterday evening were Mr. Hittson, C. M. Armstrong of Tulsa, Okla., and Harry Rippey. Medford hunters left Sunday and Monday in considerable numbers and waited along the deer trails for the first crack of day this morning. However, the numbers are not so great as they will be with the coming of the first heavy rain. The weather is now too warm to bring in meat from any distance, necessitating short trips during the hot spell. At the four places in Medford where hunting licenses have been taken out, in addition to 157 combination hunting and fishing licenses, demand for hunting equipment has been very heavy, some of the stores being very short of stock. Clothing stores in Medford are displaying a variety of scarlet shirts, hats and caps, designed to protect the sportsman from the common fatal mistake of being shot at for deer. Last year a number of accidents marred the sport, and those going out this year are in a spirit of preparedness, determined to project themselves as much as possible. The deer in the hills are reported as being plentiful and in good condition. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Ralph Pierce returned to Medford Tuesday morning after a two weeks vacation trip to Portland and other points in the northern part of the state. Bob Bean and E. F. Ridge, who are with the crew of government men engaged in cruising the lands of the O. and C. land grant, are in town today to purchase a truck to supplement the two already in use by the camp; which are used in hauling supplies and moving camp. The cruisers and compass men, who number over 100, are now encamped at Pinehurst, 25 miles east of Ashland.
